Posted: February 20, 2024

District Nurse Kylie Stillman, along with project partner Baily McDonald, will be holding a heart screening event available to all students between 6th and 12th grade to screen for Sudden Cardiac Arrest. This event is open to all students 6th-12th grade, but if your student is not enrolled at Scio Middle or Scio High School, please email ahead to indicate this (stillmank@sciok12.org)

Following is the email that went out to parents and students:

Subject: Important Heart Screening Announcement in Collaboration with Who We Play For

Dear Parents and Guardians,

The health and well-being of our students are of utmost importance to us, and we are excited to share an upcoming opportunity for our school community.

We are partnering with the organization “Who We Play For” to conduct heart screenings for our students. The mission of Who We Play For is to prevent sudden cardiac death in our youth by providing affordable heart screenings and increasing awareness.

Consent and Participation:

Participation in the heart screening is entirely voluntary. If you wish for your child to participate, please visit https://www.whoweplayfor.org/oregon-linn.

Date and Time of Heart Screening: (at this time we are only able to offer screenings to 6th-12th grade students)

Scio Middle School: Mar 14, 2024 8:30am – 1pm

Scio High School: Mar 15, 2024 8:30am – 1pm

Benefits of Heart Screenings:

-Early Detection: Identifying potential cardiac issues early allows for timely intervention and treatment.

-Prevention: The screenings contribute to preventing sudden cardiac events, ensuring the safety of our students during physical activities.

-Peace of Mind: Parents can have peace of mind knowing that their child’s heart health is being proactively monitored.

Cost:

Thanks to our collaboration with Who We Play For, the cost of the heart screening is $20.00, making it an affordable and accessible option for our school community.

– No student will be denied the screening due to financial constraints. At this time, the website is being finicky and not letting us bypass or change the amount during the payment section. For those that are requesting financial assistance or would like to donate a screening to a student that is unable, please email me at stillmank@sciok12.org.

Additional Information:

  • Each ECG heart screening is interpreted by a pediatric cardiologist serving on WWPF’s Medical Advisory Team.

  • Results will be returned via email within 7 business days after the screening.

  • If you have any questions or concerns regarding the heart screening, please feel free to contact Kylie Stillman, District RN at 503-394-3265 or stillmank@sciok12.org.

We believe that the well-being of our students goes beyond the classroom, and initiatives like these contribute to a safer and healthier school environment. We look forward to a successful heart screening event!

Sincerely,

Kylie Stillman
